John Barrowman Rumored To Be in DOCTOR WHO Christmas Special

There's a good chance we'll be seeing Captain Jack Harkness in this year's Doctor Who Christmas special, Cultbox reports. The rumor comes from a video John Barrowman posted to his Facebook:

Coincidentally, Doctor Who begins filming its Christmas special in Cardiff about a week from now! If there's one way to pump up fans for the only episode to air in 2016, this is definitely it! I would love to see Captain Jack back for a prolonged period, but I realize his schedule with Arrow makes that far less likely — although you never know. Who's excited?

You'll Never Watch TV The Same Way Again After Watching This Video Essay

What started as a slight annoyance has turned into a full-fledged obsession for TV critic Myles McNutt, who started a hashtag called #EmptyCupAwards in 2014 when he noticed a few actors doing a terrible job of convincingly acting as if their characters' coffee cups were full of liquid. I feel his pain — I've noticed this kind of thing for years as well, but he had the ambition to team up with Slate and create a whole video essay about it. I'm sure a lot of you are going to complain in the comments about how the entire concept of this video is nitpicky, but if this video makes an impact on just a handful of actors and convinces them to step up their cup game, it'll all be worth it. Also: apologies for those of you who will now never be able to watch TV the same way again after seeing this. I know if I saw this video without having noticed the coffee cup problem before, I would notice it every single time moving forward. Check it out:

Season 2 of ATTACK ON TITAN Delayed Until 2017

It appears we won't be seeing new Attack On Titan until 2017. According to the Wikia (translated from original source Mision Tokyo), the news was first uncovered when a Spanish television show tried to get rights to a simulcast for the original run date of fall of this year:

As stated by the source, Selecta Visión contacted Kodansha requesting the rights to simulcast Attack on Titan Season 2 in Spain during this Fall lineup, but they were told by the Japanese company that it will not be airing on this year and that it has been rescheduled to some point of 2017, so the distributor estimates that it will premiere during the anime season that starts in January.

This would make sense as there has been no advertisement for the upcoming season. Hopefully things don't get delayed much longer! We've waited for almost three years for this!

First Inspirational Trailer For Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo's QUEEN OF KATWE

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo (who should have an Oscar for his work in Selma) topline an inspirational new Disney film called Queen of Katwe, about a young girl in a Ugandan village who uses her skills at the game of chess as a way to achieve her dreams. It's a shame the movie decided to use dialogue as obvious as "the little one can become the big one," because the metaphors about using chess to overcome obstacles are made exceedingly clear in the rest of the trailer without that on-the-nose explanation; still, this looks like a solid breakout role for newcomer Madina Nalwanga and an inspiring film that's based on a true story.

Queen of Katwe hits theaters on September 23rd.

Check out the trailer below, and then read the super detailed synopsis at the bottom:

“Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Directed by Mira Nair (“Monsoon Wedding”) from a screenplay by William Wheeler (“The Hoax”) based on the book by Tim Crothers, “Queen of Katwe” is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher (“The Darjeeling Limited”) and John Carls (“Where the Wild Things Are”) with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. The film stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelowo (“Selma”), Oscar® winner and Tony Award® nominee Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.
For 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga) and her family, life in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle. Her mother, Harriet (Nyong’o), is fiercely determined to take care of her family and works tirelessly selling vegetables in the market to make sure her children are fed and have a roof over their heads. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated. Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life, and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and wit the game requires and immediately shows potential. Recognizing Phiona’s natural aptitude for chess and the fighting spirit she’s inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor her, but Harriet is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. As Phiona begins to succeed in local chess competitions, Katende teaches her to read and write in order to pursue schooling. She quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments, but breaks away from her family to focus on her own life. Her mother eventually realizes that Phiona has a chance to excel and teams up with Katende to help her fulfill her extraordinary potential, escape a life of poverty and save her family.

How Did Jared Leto Get That Laugh For The Joker in SUICIDE SQUAD?

With Suicide Squad’s release day swiftly approaching, the media frenzy for the movie is going to pick up. This just happens to be one of those posts that is trying to keep Suicide Squad in the forefront of your mind.

The word around Hollywood is that Jerad Leto is the personification of Method acting. From extreme weight gain for one role to extreme weight loss for another, the man is fully committed to his craft.

Leto recently divulged another way he got into character for his role as The Joker during an interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box. Here is what he had to say about how he prepared for the role and how he came up with his Joker laugh, which we've heard in the trailers:

“I worked on the laugh walking around the streets of New York and Toronto, and I kinda would walk around the streets and see what laughs would get under people’s skin.
You know when you hear someone laugh at a restaurant? It’s a little jarring. I tried them out. And I kind of got to a place where I would laugh and people are always turning around like, ‘Who is this creepy guy behind me?'”

It seems like there has been a growing concern about the impact that this movie will have, especially with the recent disliking of Batman v Superman and the reshooting that has happened for Suicide Squad. People are concerned with how this movie will turn out. I say don't worry about it. The cast is strong and the trailers have been engaging. I have faith that, if nothing else, this will be a good popcorn flick.

Suicide Squad will hit theaters August 5th.

Netflix is teaming up with the creator of Misfits and E4 to bring an exorcism comedy to the streaming platform. THR reports cult superhero comedy creator Howard Overton will be developing Crazy Face, a series that will star Cara Theobold (Downton Abbey) and Susan Wokoma (Chewing Gum).

The series will focus on spirits with unfinished business possessing living people and working through their problems, and humans that can see them and have to stop them. If it's anything like Misfits' first couple of seasons, it's sure to be a fun (but dark) ride!

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Season 4 Trailer: The Difference Between Pain and Suffering

Orange is the New Black is one of Netflix's most consistently great original shows, so it's no surprise that the streaming service renewed the series for three more seasons a few months ago. Season 4 premieres next month, and the first trailer just debuted this morning — and things are looking pretty rough in Litchfield right about now. The trailer doesn't flat-out say it, but it strongly hints that at least one of the main characters isn't going to make it out alive. As always, I'm intrigued to see what happens.

Season 4 premieres on June 17th.

Tim Burton Says BEETLEJUICE 2 Not Guaranteed, "Has To Be Right"

Tim Burton is interested in making Beetlejuice 2, but not if it's going to end up being something he doesn't want. The director cleared the air with Collider after months of rumors about a film no one knows is on or off:

"This is the thing, it’s something that I’m interested in, but there’s so many stories [online], dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I’ve talked to these people and they didn’t wanna hear this so they just made up a story. But the fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I’ve talked to a few people. It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right. It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it’s not the Beetlejuice trilogy. So it’s something that if the elements are right—because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet."

Sounds like if it happens, it happens. Burton is at a point in his career where he doesn't NEED another film, so why not only do a film if it's only something fans will appreciate? I respect him for having that stance, even if he is in a position of success that grants him that option.

Watch: Unsettling Trailer For Adam Wingard's Next Horror Film, THE WOODS

Adam Wingard is the director of films like You're Next, The Guest, and segments of the horror anthology VHS movies, so he clearly knows his way around genre films. His newest movie, The Woods, just received its first trailer, and despite its bland title and a reliance on a slowed-down cover of a classic song (a trope that's become increasingly annoying in recent years), the visuals are still unsettling and creepy in all the right ways. If his previous collaborations with writer Simon Barrett are any indication, this is going to be a movie genre fans will absolutely love, and I have a feeling there's a lot more going on underneath the surface than this trailer lets on.

The Woods hits theaters on September 16th.

One of the scariest movies in decades, THE WOODS reinvents horror with a completely fresh and terrifying take on the genre.

SPACE STORY: A BAD DAY Mashes Up GRAVITY, THE MARTIAN, INTERSTELLAR, and More

YouTuber Luc Bergeron has cut clips of space movies like 2001, Gravity, Sphere, Interstellar, and more into a single, vaguely coherent shared universe storyline called Space Story: A Bad Day. I like mashups like this (and the all-time brilliant Hell's Club and its sequel) much more than the one I wrote about yesterday that simply takes two popular properties and smashes them together. At least here, it feels like there's some original storytelling lurking beneath the surface.

Ridley Scott To Direct Brutal Western Thriller WRAITHS OF THE BROKEN LAND

$

Holy crap. This is the biggest movie news of the day for me.

According to Deadline, Ridley Scott is reteaming with The Martian writer Drew Goddard for a western thriller called Wraiths of the Broken Land.

After Bone Tomahawk blew me away last year (it went on to become my favorite film of 2015), I wanted to read more from writer/director S. Craig Zahler, who I thought did a superb job with crafting that script. Bone Tomahawk was Zahler's directorial debut, but he's also a novelist, and one of the first things I read after seeing BT was his novel Wraiths of the Broken Land, a brutal western about a man hired to help save two kidnapped sisters who have been sold into prostitution to a ruthless Mexican gang leader. It's nearly as unflinching as Bone Tomahawk was, but I thought we'd never see Wraiths adapted into a film — mainly because when I interviewed Zahler, he essentially said as much:

"So it was suggested that I adapt Wraiths of the Broken Land, which is the second of my western novels, and I said, ‘That thing is big and I don’t want to chop it down so it fits a movie length. I’d need to remove two thirds of this book so it could be a movie. But I can write another western that’s another rescue mission western.' And that other western was Bone Tomahawk."

Having read the book, I see what he means. There's a lot happening in the book, and it'll be interesting to see how Goddard adapts this, since it appears Zahler won't have any involvement with this movie adaptation at all. Here's the official synopsis:

A brutal and unflinching tale that takes many of its cues from both cinema and pulp horror, Wraiths of the Broken Land is like no Western you've ever seen or read. Desperate to reclaim two kidnapped sisters who were forced into prostitution, the Plugfords storm across the badlands and blast their way through Hell. This gritty, character-driven piece will have you by the throat from the very first page and drag you across sharp rocks for its unrelenting duration. Prepare yourself for a savage Western experience that combines elements of Horror, Noir and Asian ultra-violence. You've been warned.

Ryan Reynolds Crashes The DEADPOOL Honest Trailer

Has there ever been a better fit for an Honest Trailer than Deadpool? It's a smash hit R-rated superhero movie with a quippy, snarky sense of humor and a childish bent to many of its jokes — sounds like those two were made for each other. Bonus: Ryan Reynolds himself shows up (in voiceover form) to join in on the fun.

Tom Hardy Will Reportedly Have a Cameo in STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

$

Warning — possible spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Here's an interesting piece of Star Wars news from the UK. A website called Express is reporting that Tom Hardy has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode VIII, but he'll only play a small role as a Stormtrooper that'll be similar to the size of Daniel Craig's part in The Force Awakens. (If you recall, Craig played the trooper who was Jedi mind tricked by Daisy Ridley's Rey when she was in captivity.)

According to the site, Hardy will play a trooper who recognizes John Boyega's Finn as FN-2187 from before Finn defected from the First Order. Then this happens:

Finn will get quite the surprise as Hardy slaps him on the behind, completely unaware that he’s been spotted.
Thinking’s he been captured, Finn actually finds Hardy’s stormtrooper just remembers him from the First Order’s training days, and wants to catch up with his old friend.
Hardy then congratulates Finn on his apparent promotion as a Resistance Infiltrator, when actually he’s on their side.

The site speculates that Hardy's face will be covered by a helmet the whole time, just like Craig's was, so this will probably just be more of an Easter egg for fans than anything else. Production has been underway on the movie for a while now in London, so it makes sense that a UK paper would be the one to uncover these details. A lot of UK newspapers tend to lean toward the gossipy side of things, so I'd normally caution taking this "news" with a grain of salt, but Carrie Fisher herself retweeted this story, which lends it a bit more veracity than it would have had otherwise.

Video Reimagines E.T. as a 1990s Sitcom

The team at Mashable Watercooler cut together clips from Steven Spielberg's 1982 film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial to make it look like the intro of a sitcom from the 1990s. Appropriately, they use the theme song from Perfect Strangers, the '80s-'90s series about a foreign man (some might call him an "alien") coming to stay with his cousin in Chicago. The song definitely has the cheese factor that was seemingly a requirement of all '90s sitcom theme music, and the visuals work surprisingly well with it. Check it out:

Bryan Singer Says LEGION and HELLFIRE Series Will Explore New Layers of the X-Men Universe

$

As of right now, two X-Men inspired TV projects are in development at Fox. They are called Legion and Hellfire. It seems Bryan Singer is going to have a hand in bringing these projects to life.

Legion is set up at FX and it will be written and produced by Fargo creator Noah Hawley. We previously learned that this show "introduces the story of David Haller: Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real."

Hellfire is being developed by Evan Katz (24: Live Another Day), Manny Coto (24), Patrick McKay (Star Trek Beyond), and JD Payne (Star Trek Beyond). It will be set in the late 1960s, and it "follows a young Special Agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires – known as 'The Hellfire Club' – to take over the world."

During an interview with Variety, Singer talked about these two series saying that they will explore untapped layers within the X-Men universe. He explained:

“I think the underbelly [could be explored]. There’s always something interesting about a school that’s got a military aspect beneath its classrooms. Is there another layer to all of that? Is there another layer to the Hellfire Club? The idea of, ‘Who’s running the world?’ — that’s something that was touched upon in First Class but has yet to be fully explored.
"It just has to be explored in a very gentle, methodical way. And I’ve seen it go haywire. I’m not going to be specific where I believe it has. The audience will tell you. But when it’s done right, it all can connect.”

There’s a lot of potential for these series. Fox has a ton of mutant characters to play with, and there’s a whole comic history as well for the creators of these series to pull from. Singer has been involved with the X-Men since 2000, so it makes sense that he would want to be involved with these projects. As far as more X-Men films go, he said:

“When you spend nearly two decades in a universe, to simply say, ‘I’m done,’ or, ‘I’m going to abandon it,’ just wouldn’t make sense to me. I’m very connected to this universe and a lot of these actors, and also the characters, whomever plays them. So never say never."

I’ve seen a lot of reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse, and many of them are saying that it’s time for Singer to move on, but according to this statement, it doesn’t sound like he’s going anywhere.

fantastic-trailer-for-raiders-the-story-of-the-greatest-fan-film-ever-made

We’ve been hearing about this Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made documentary for years, and it finally has an official trailer and release date. The doc focuses on a group of passionate Indiana Jones fans who went out to make a shot-for-shot remake of Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. They started making the film as kids, but they didn’t finish it until 20 years later.

This film offers us every little detail of how it was made and all of the drama surrounding it. As a guy who used to make all kinds of films when I was growing up with my brothers and friends, I’m fascinated by this story. I’m sure many of us who got into making movies when we were kids will be able to relate to this story. Here’s the synopsis for the doc:

After Steven Spielberg's classic Raiders of the Lost Ark was released 35 years ago, three 11-year-old boys from Mississippi set out on what would become a 7-year-long labor of love and tribute to their favorite film: a faithful, shot-for-shot adaptation of the action adventure film. They finished every scene...except one; the film's explosive airplane set piece. Over two decades later, the trio reunited with the original cast members from their childhood in order to complete their masterpiece. Featuring interviews with John Rhys Davies, Eli Roth and more, Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made is just that: the story of this long-gestating project's culmination, chronicling the friends' dedication to their artistic vision-mixed in with some movie magic-to create a personal, epic love letter to a true modern classic.

The movie is set to hit theaters and On Demand on June 17th through Drafthouse Films. Drafthouse Films will also take the film on tour with Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala, who are the creators of the fan film. Below the trailer you will find the details on the tour:

The tour will also offer a very special and rare double feature opportunity to see the festival hit documentary followed by the fan film remake, a.k.a The Adaptation. Hitting major markets including Los Angeles, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, New York, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle, the theatrical Q&A appearances during their tour will give audiences the opportunity to hear the hair-raising stories of the defiantly DIY production directly from its filmmakers.
The Raiders: Follow Your Dreams Tour will kick off in early June with a series of advance double-feature Q&A screenings leading up to official June 17th release date and continue to additional markets across the country throughout summer. In addition to theatrical Q&A appearances, the tour will be accompanied by a dynamic social media campaign including video posts from the road and interviews with inspiring people and places across America. Mesmerizing Trailer for Park Chan-wook's New Film THE HANDMAIDEN

Park Chan-wook, the filmmaker behind Oldboy, Thirst, and Stoker, has made a new film called The Handmaiden, and today we have a teaser trailer for you watch. I’m a huge fan of Park’s work, and the trailer for his next film is absolutely mesmerizing. It’s a truly great trailer, and if you’re a fan of his films then I’m sure you’re gonna love what you see here.

The movie based on the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. The story is set in Japan and Korea in the 1930s. It follows a woman who is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her. In an interview with the Korea Times, the director said:

“The film will provide subtle pleasures here and there, because it is a very talkative and charming film with witty lines. It is the most unusual [film] out of my filmography. I chose this piece after Stoker because I was completely taken with the plot. I read the original English novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and it was mesmerizing. The characters were so real and the plot had a shocking reversal. I had been thinking since then that I should definitely make this into a film.”

The movie is being released by Amazon, and it’s set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie stars Ha Jung-woo, Kim Min-hee, Jo Jin-woong, and Kim Tae-ri, and I included some character posters below.
