Charlize Theron has been cast in the lead role in the remake of Chan-Wook Park's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. William Monahan has also been hired to write the script for the movie. With Oldboy currently in production, I imagine one day all of Park's Korean-language films will be remade for American audiences.
The original 2005 film followed a woman who spends 13 years in prison for a crime she did not commit and then sets about exacting the revenge she has plotted during her time behind bars. Theron will play the woman out for vengeance.
Monahan talked a little about the film saying,
This will be very American and very unexpected. Park is a genius; it's the Everest of adaptations and I've got blood in my teeth to do it.
The original film was great, so if you haven't seen it yet you should definitely watch it. Theron is a great actress, and I'm sure she'll be great in the role. This is a great story, and I hope Theron and Monahan will do it justice.
