Kevin Feige Didn't Think He Would Be Able To Get Sam Raimi To Direct DOCTOR STRANGE 2

When it was announced that Sam Raimi was going to be directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I was super excited about what he would bring to the film. I’ve been a fan of Raimi since I first discovered Evil Dead when I was in high school and he’s made some pretty awesome movies over the years.

After Scott Derrickson dropped out of the project, I loved that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reached out to Raimi to take on the gig, but Feige didn’t think that he would actually be able to get him on board to do it. This whole thing started off as a pipe dream for Feige, but then it became a reality.

In a recent interview with Empire, Feige explained how Raimi’s name ended up on the list of directors: "Our executive producer, Eric Carroll, and Richie Palmer were calling around to see who was interested, and Sam's agent said, 'What about Sam Raimi?' We thought, 'That would be incredible, but there's no chance of that.' But he wanted to come in and meet. And in the first meeting, it was amazing to reconnect with him, and see his enthusiasm to jump back into this world."

With the original Spider-Man trilogy, Raimi took comic book and superhero movies to a whole new level. He helped bring respect to the genre and showed everyone that comic books could really make great movies!

Feige went on to talk about his initial meeting with the filmmaker for Multiverse of Madness, and shared an amusing point of conversation they had about the development of the film: "'[Raimi] said, 'We might need four or five pre-viz and conceptual artists.' I said, 'Sam, we've got dozens. They're all yours.' It took me back to the days where I was just watching on the 'Spidey' movies, and him having to fight for that, while essentially defining and revolutionizing what that kind of filmmaking was at the time."

It’s funny how Raimi was still thinking on a smaller level and that asking for four or five pre-rez artists might be a big ask for Marvel. But, as you know, Marvel now has some insane resources at their disposal for the projects that they develop. It’s incredible to see what Marvel Studios has become.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will come to theaters on May 6th, 2022.
