Brian Grazier, Ron Howard, and Akiva Goldsman have been hard at work trying to get a big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series into production for years. They had two failed attempts with Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. in which the plan was to make three feature films with two TV series to tell a more detailed story and tie the films together.
The last thing we heard was that Media Rights Capital stepped into to finance one film, and then see how it does before they commit to the rest. That version has Russell Crowe set to star in the film as Roland Deschain. That plan is still in play, but it looks like another offer is now on the table.
Grazer recently revealed to Deadline that he has "just been approached by a Silicon Valley investor willing to finance Dark Tower as originally constructed. Now it’s a matter of deciding what path to take." This is great news! As the original construction included the three films and two TV seasons. That sounds like a much better deal than what they had with MCR! From my point of view, it's the perfect opportunity, but you never know what the details are behind the situation. If they're good, then I don't see why they wouldn't take it.
Either way, there's still interest in getting these books adapted, and it's eventually going to happen. I've been waiting years for this to happen, so I'm extremely excited for the good news.
