Costume Closet: Spotlight on Nightwing

Nightwing is a character I have grown to love over the last 10 years. He's Batman with a soul if you will. That's not troll bait mind you, just how I honestly feel. We could get into a whole other ball of wax regarding his time as Batman, which I personally thought was cut way too short, but that's for another article.

That said, Mr.Grayson has gone through many different looks throughout the years, and most recently has gone with a different color scheme as well with his New 52 design. DC proper however aren't the only ones to give the former boy wonder a new look, so here's a collection of some of my favorite redesigns outside of the house that Superman built. The Nightwing above btw is from artist extraordinaire Artgerm.

Nightwing by Coran Kizer Stone

Here, Grayson is a bit older, and while he is the most respected of the Bat family other than Bruce already, this design does a good job of conveying that, while still keeping the sleekness of his previous suit. Not a fan of grifter type masks, but it works in this instance.

Nightwing by Bobby Rubio

Here we have a far edgier version of the costume with cape included. I like this design, and could possibly see this as a replacement to the costume they ultimately went with for his time as Batman. It conveys the more serious aura if you will that Bruce always gave off, but has the aerodynamic pieces to it that cater to Dick. We all know he hates capes though, so this probably wouldn't be a good match to his normal persona.

Nightwing by Shoze

I love hoods. Seriously, from Captain Marvel to Green Arrow there isn't someone in DC proper that doesn't look better in a hood, and Nightwing is no different. This seems to be a younger take on Nightwing, but if anyone was going to take on that identity other than Dick, this suit would be on the top of my list of choices.

Nightwing by Aitor Erana

Purely just for fun, but I happen to love the idea behind it. Let him be more of a nightcrawler as it were and in the middle of the fight when it starts than just watching it from up above. I also dig the thinking behind the vest underneath and the holsters on his arms.

Nightwing by Alex Ross

Evidently Alex Ross took a stab at redesigning Nightwing (who knew), and from the limited sketch it appears to be an older version. Not Kingdom Come old (though maybe that is what it was for originally) but aged nonetheless. I actually like this look a great deal, and again, hoods are cool.

Nightwing by Eric Guzman

A bit more sic fi style to the design here, and I dig the neon sign like insignia on his chest. I guess there would be no mistaking who punched you in a brawl with this costume. One of my favorite things about it is the pseudo cowl formed by the highness of the neck and wideness of his mask. A cowl without a giant headpiece fits the character, who is all about freeform and speed, and his personality.

Nightwing by Marc Maraya

Last but not least, if the Nolanverse got ahold of Grayson's threads this is what it might look like. The costume actually would lend itself to Nolan's interpretation, but with one caveat. The mask would not be enough in the movie universe to keep anyone from knowing who that is, so something a bit more involved would be needed to make this work on screen. Maybe a hood?

Well, I think that about does it. Any cool redesigns that I missed? Send them my way if you see any and let me know what you think of the ones we spotlighted today.
