It's been a long time since Dracula: Year Zero has been in the news. At one point, Alex Proyas (The Crow) was set to direct the movie with Sam Worthington attached to star, then commercial director Gary Shore (Wolverine Vs. The Hand) ended up taking his place. Variety confirms that Shore is still attached to direct the film for Universal Pictures, and they also report that Fast and Furious 6 and Immortals actor Luke Evans will be taking on the lead role of Dracula in the movie. I think he's a solid choice; he certainly has the look.
There's not much known about the story other than it is "a mix of mythology and true history as it follows the story of Prince Vlad, the inspiration for the Dracula character popularized by the Bram Stoker novel." I'm not sure how much has changes since Proyas was involved, but when talking about the script in a previous interview he said the story will...
...put the whole legend on its head in every conceivable way and comes out with something that is both a kind of an ode to Bram Stoker’s original Dracula, in that it’s kind of a prequel to that, but it also redefines the character to such an extent that I found it quite exciting, so that is very much a kind of reinvention of that character and it’s why I got excited about it.
It's Prince Vlad of Transylvania in the 14th century, and to save his kingdom and his family he takes his first step into darkness, It's his evolution into the monster that Dracula became.
This has the potential to be a solid Dracula flick. Hopefully it turns out as enthralling as it sounds. What do you think about Evans playing Dracula in the movie?
