Mama director Andy Muschietti has found his next film project. He'll be developing a big screen adaptation of an upcoming book written by Josh Malerman called Bird Box. Universal Pictures optioned the manuscript for the book. There seems to be a lot of book optioning going on in Hollywood these days way before the books are even released. This book isn't even set to be released until 2014, and I imagine the movie will follow shortly after.
According to the report the story centers on "a blindfolded threesome comprised of a woman and two children who make their way down a river in a seemingly postapocalyptic setting." It's also described as being in the vein of films like Children of Men and The Others. That's all we know at this point.
This seems like it could be a good project for Muschietti to take on. I loved the first half of Mama, but thought the second half sucked ass. It could have been a great horror movie, but there were some missed opportunities. Maybe this time around he'll give us an all around solid movie.
