Sony Set to Announce the PLAYSTATION 4 on February 20th

Ok boys and girls, this is the moment we have been waiting for. Let the next round of the console wars begin!

Sony has invited several journalists to a huge PlayStation event that is to take place in New York city on February 20th. Now although they didn’t fully say that news of a new console will be revealed, they did however put up new posts on both their Facebook and Twitter accounts telling people to “see the future” of PlayStation. So that could only mean one thing right?

As you all know, we have been hearing rumors about the PlayStation 4 (if they will even call it that), otherwise known as Project Orbis. That news of course goes hand in hand with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor, which has been codenamed Project Durango.

It has been rumored that the next PlayStation will include an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU that can output at 4096 x 2160. Along with that, the system will also be able to support games via Blue-ray discs and PSN downloads, no surprises there of course. It will also have the ability to lock those games to your accounts to prevent piracy (Really? People still do that with video games?) and to take a cut out of the used video game market (so GameStop may be on the outs in years to come). Last but not least, it will also have backwards compatibility so that you can play all of your favorite PS3 games on the new system.

Now of course, these are just rumors at this point and we will have to wait to see what is unveiled at the big show. But you have to admit, Sony is taking the right stance this go round. During the last (and current) generation, they waited a full year to unveil the PS3 after Microsoft had already released the Xbox 360. Not too long ago, it was said that the company would be following the same tactic and letting its competition go out first. I suppose they all wanted to surprise the hell out of us and start the race off early in the year.

Your move Microsoft!
