Colin Trevorrow to Take on FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR

Remember when Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow said this...

I can’t speak with any specificity as to what the next thing will be. There are amazing opportunities that have arisen as a result of this. One of them, I will say, will probably create a good deal of ire against me on the Internet when people find out what it is. So, I just want to say in advance that I promise you, for all those who love the mythology that I will be tackling, trust that I love it as much as you do. And I will respect it, and hopefully make it not suck.

And we all thought he was talking about Star Wars: Episode VII? Well, it turns out that he will not be directing Star Wars, and the movie he was talking about was Disney's remake of Flight of the Navigator. He's been hired along with Derek Connolly to re-write the script for the film, and it is being developed as a potential directing vehicle for Trevorrow.

This was one of my favorite sci-fi films as a kid growing up in the 80's, but it's been a hell of a long time since I've seen it. The story follows a 12 year old boy who gets abducted by an alien space craft. He ends up traveling eight years into the future from 1978 to 1986. The only problem is he can't remember what happened. NASA enters the picture and tries to exploit the poor kid. Maybe it's time I watch this one with my kids, and see what they think about it.

This seems like a project that Trevorrow is better suited for, and who knows, maybe this is just a warm up to get him into the director's chair of one of the future Star Wars movies. Trevorrow is a talented director who obviously loves the story, and I think he'll do a solid job bringing it to life again on the big screen. Are you a big fan of the original film, and are you happy to see Trevorrow developing the remake?
