A month ago a Kickstarter campaign was launched for Eric Powell and David Fincher's CG animated feature film adaptation of The Goon. They asked the fans to help raise $400,000 to create an animated story board to help sell the film to potential investors. It will include the voice actors, sound effects and music. It will also span the entire film. Well, the fans came through for them and they surpassed their $400,000 goal, which is pretty freakin' awesome! The campaign was successfully funded yesterday and closed with $441,900. 7,500 backers came through, some even donated as much as $10,000.
If you're wondering why Fincher just didn't fund the project himself, Tim Miller explained in an interview with Last Call with Carson Daly,
David Fincher writing a check for $400,000 is not going to get this made. It's about getting the fans involved and showing the studios it's not just a Hollywood vanity project.
Creator Eric Powell expressed his thoughts on Twitter after the funding was reached and thanked the fans saying,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate you guys. Thanks for pushing us to do a kickstarter and thanks for pushing it! Won a major battle, Goon fans. To win the war we still have to sell the film.
I think the fact that the fans actually came out and gave $400,000 of their own money shows that this movie is something that people want to see! I have faith and confidence that this team of people will be able to sell the film to investors. Here's an illustrated breakdown of what will happen with the funds.
What are your thoughts on The Goon reaching it's funding goal?!
The story is about the adventures of the Goon, a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for the feared mobster Labrazio. The Goon (and his sidekick Franky) often get tied up in other machinations, often in relation to the evil zombie gangs under the command of the Nameless Zombie Priest. The series has a distinctly paranormal slant, with the average story concerning ghosts, ghouls, skunk-apes with an unnatural hunger for pie, extra-dimensional aliens, and mad scientists.
