Ed Zwick to Direct Tobey Maguire as Chess Legend Bobby Fischer

$

A couple of years ago a movie about chess legend Bobby Fischer called Pawn Sacrifice was set up at Sony Pictures with David Fincher set to direct and Tobey Maguire producing. After two years of not hearing much of anything on this project, it's back in the news.

Maguire is now officially set to star in the film and will be playing Fischer. He's is a great actor, and I think he'll end up doing an amazing job playing the chess master.

Fincher obviously didn't wait around for the movie to happen so the studio is now in talks with Blood Diamond director Ed Zwick to develop it. Zwick has also directed films such as The Last Samurai and Defiance, and I think he'd be a great choice for the film project. I was just looking forward to seeing what Fincher would do with it.

I'm fascinated by the life of Bobby Fischer; it was quite interesting and colorful. He was a chess prodigy, and one of the greatest chess players of all time. There are some great books and documentaries out there that tell his tale.

What do you think of Zwick directing Maguire in this biopic?

Here's a brief rundown of his life, thanks to wiki:

A chess prodigy, at age 13 Fischer won a "brilliancy" that became known as The Game of the Century. Starting at age 14, he played in eight United States Championships, winning each by at least a point. At age 15½, he became both the youngest grandmaster and the youngest candidate for the World Championship up to that time. He won the 1963–64 U.S. Championship 11–0, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament. In the early 1970s he became one of the most dominant players in modern history—winning the 1970 Interzonal by a record 3½-point margin and winning 20 consecutive games, including two unprecedented 6–0 sweeps in the Candidates Matches. According to research by Jeff Sonas, in 1971 Fischer had separated himself from the rest of the world by a larger margin of playing skill than any player since the 1870s. He became the first official World Chess Federation (FIDE) number-one rated chess player in July 1971, and his 54 total months at number one is the third longest of all time.

In 1972, he captured the World Championship from Boris Spassky of the USSR in a match widely publicized as a Cold War confrontation. The match, held in Reykjavík, Iceland, attracted more worldwide interest than any chess match before or since. In 1975, Fischer declined to defend his title when he could not reach agreement with FIDE over the conditions for the match. He became more reclusive and did not play competitive chess again until 1992, when he won an unofficial rematch against Spassky. The competition was held in Yugoslavia, which was then under a United Nations embargo. This led to a conflict with the U.S. government, which was also seeking income tax from Fischer on his match winnings. Fischer never returned to his native country. After ending his competitive career, he proposed a newvariant of chess and a modified chess timing system. His idea of adding a time increment after each move is now standard, and his variant Chess960 is gaining in popularity.

In his later years, Fischer lived in Hungary, Germany, the Philippines, Japan, and Iceland. During this time he made increasingly anti-American and anti-Israel statements. After his U.S. passport was revoked over the Yugoslavia sanctions issue, he was detained by Japanese authorities for nine months in 2004 and 2005 under threat of deportation. In February 2005, Iceland granted him right of residence as a "stateless" alien and issued him a passport. When Japan refused to release him on that basis, Iceland's parliament voted in March 2005 to give him full citizenship. The Japanese authorities then released Fischer to Iceland, where he lived until his death in 2008.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK IMAX Screening Poster Art

Yesterday we got the official announcement the Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark would be getting a week long IMAX re-release starting on September 7th. Now we have this poster art for the re-release to share with you.

Spielberg loves the new IMAX print that we'll get to see, and here's what he had to say about it in a statement:

I didn’t know if the 1981 print would stand up to a full IMAX transfer, so I came expecting a sort of grainy, muddy, and overly enlarged representation of the movie I had made [31] years ago. And I was blown away by the fact that it looked better than the movie I had made [31] years ago.

All the shadows in the earlier scenes that we shot in Hawaii [were] always kind of muddy anyway on 35mm, because we couldn’t schlep all of our big arc lights down into this valley. Suddenly, there was definition in the shadows, which I had never seen before. And the shadows weren’t murky and washed out; they were sharp as a tack.

Incredble! He went on to say that the next movie he'd like to do in IMAX is Close Encounters of the Third Kind! Um, yes please.

I think the only other movie I would ever think about going out on an IMAX screen would be Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Forty percent of that film was shot in 70 millimeters, so the conversion would look extraordinary if we ever did put it up on an IMAX screen.

Hell yeah, it would! Will you be going to the IMAX screening for this classic film?

Scully Sure Did Say "Oh My God" a Lot in THE X-FILES

I always thought that Dana Scully used the phrase "Oh my God" a lot in The X-Files, and this video proves it. YouTube  edited together every one of her "Oh my God" lines and threw them together in this one video. She definitely got really good at saying it!

In my opinion The X-Files is one of the greatest TV series of all time. I think it's time I watch that show again. Enjoy the video!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Possible Plot Summary Revealed

Marvel Studios is currently in the process of developing their epic big screen adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy. They most recently hired Chris McCoy to write the script for for the movie, but what exactly will the story he's writing entail? Thanks to Production Weekly, we have a possible plot summary that gives us a little tease of what this movie might be about.

It's about a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

As of right now there's no confirmation that this is plot summary is correct, but it definitely sounds plausible. The U.S. pilot is most likely the character Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, a gun-toting half-human/half-alien inter-galactic vigilante. Then there's the futuristic ex-cons mentioned, which would be Drax The Destroyer, a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos; Groot, a giant tree-man; Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives; and Gamora, the last survivor of her species who was saved by Thanos to be his assassin but now battles him.

Who's your favorite character within the Guardians of the Galaxy circle of characters? And what do you think of the short plot summary?

THE WOLVERINE - First Plot Summary Revealed

The official Facebook page for James Mangold's The Wolverine has been updated with a new short plot summary for the highly anticipated film.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

Hugh Jackman is awesomely reprising his role as the badass superhero, and in a recent interview he talked about the movie being a stand alone story explaining,

We've deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture. With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it's going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic. The approach to character means we won't be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it'll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film.

The movie is based on the 1982 comic series created by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, and is currently shooting. It's scheduled to hit theaters on July 26th, 2013, and also co-stars Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, and Brian Tee.

I know the last Wolverine movie left a bad taste in a lot of fans' mouths, but have you been warming up to this new movie, and are you excited about seeing it?

Tom Hardy and Michael Shannon to Star in THE LONG RED ROAD

Tom Hardy (Dark Knight Rises) and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) are set to star in the feature film adaptation of Brett C. Leonard's play, The Long Red RoadPhilip Seymour Hoffman already directed the work for the stage with Hardy playing the character Sammy. Here's a description of the story:

A devastating new play about the impact of addiction, The Long Red Road introduced audiences to Sammy, who has fled his past and landed in South Dakota, where he is slowlydrinking himself to death. When his young daughter arrives desperate to reunite with her father, he must decide between the self-hatred that consumes him and the responsibilities he’s tried to leave behind.

Sounds like a pretty intense drama, but I have no doubt that Hardy and Shannon will act the shit out of it. Hardy is set to reprise his role, and Shannon will play Sammy's brother, Bob. As of right now no director is officially attached, but there's a chance that Hoffman might end up being involved.

It's going to be awesome to see Hardy and Shannon working together in a film like this.

Joe Carnahan Talks About What Happened with DAREDEVIL

Director Joe Carnahan did his best to get a new Darevevil movie made, but he was brought in so late in the game there was no way they would have the time to develop it properly. So it looks like Fox will be giving the rights to the character back to Marvel. I loved what Carnahan wanted to do with it, by setting the story in a 1970s Hells Kitchen! The sizzle reel he put together has an awesome vibe!

During a radio interview with The Radio Dan Show he talked about what happened with his attempt at getting the movie made...

I was brought in pretty late in the game, and my take probably didn’t help matters since they had an existing script.  But I just thought that if you were going to do it, this was the way to go.  This is the way that intrigued me… It was initially something I passed on because Christopher Nolan had done such a lovely job with Batman and unless you’re going to go after that trilogy, then that’s how you have to think.  You can’t out-hurdle that, then what’s the point of trying?  So it set the bar extraordinarily high, and I thought ‘Well, if we’re going to do this, let’s have a discussion about Hell’s Kitchen, and how it was really Hell’s Kitchen in the 70s,” so that got me really excited.  But as I mentioned, the clock ticking and this kind of October drop-dead date, it wasn’t tenable.  And having gone down this road in the past when you’re trying to write something and shoot it at the same time is disastrous, and I think you’d need an adequate amount of time to put that script together in the right way.  My brother [Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom)] was interested in writing it with me, so we’ll see.

It's a shame that this won't happen anytime soon. Hopefully Marvel likes the idea and one day brings Carnahan in to realize his vision of the character. Not sure if that will happen though, because Marvel is a Disney brand now, and this version of Daredevil would be crazy dark.

Did you like Carnahan's idea, and are you looking forward to seeing what Marvel ends up doing with the character once they get him back?

Here's a disturbing image of Chris Evans as Captain America. His body has been warped to give us a look at what the movie Captain America would look like with the body of artist Rob Liefeld's ridiculously unproportioned 1990s character design. It's just wrong on so many levels, but funny as hell.

Here's a great piece of Geek Art that that throws Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns Batman in the world of the classic 1960's TV series. As you can see, this Batman is a lot more hardcore, and isn't afraid to get blood on his hands. The piece was created by deviant art artist m7781. I love that Robin is scared shitless of what this Batman is capable of.

First Look at Dwayne Johnson and Gina Carano in FAST SIX

Dawyne Johnson tweeted a first look at Gina Carano (Haywire) and him on the set of director Justin Lin's Fast Six. The photo came along with the following note, ""Beast & the Beauty".. Me & my FAST 6 partner in ass kickins (and fun)"

The official title for this film hasn't been revealed yet, so until it is, we'll be calling it Fast Six. So far all we know about the film is that Vin Diesel and Paul Walker will apparently be headed to London with the usual suspects to pull off some kind of heist. Johnson and his team, which includes Carano, will be going after them.

I loved the last Fast Five movie, and I'm excited to see where they take the characters in the future installments. Are you a fan of the Fast and Furious franchise?

It's so awesome to see Arnold Schwarzenegger back in action! The first trailer for his new film The Last Stand, directed by acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-woon (I Saw The Devil, The Good, The Bad, The Weird), has been released, and It... Looks... Incredibly Badass!

I wouldn't expect anything less from Jee-woon though, the guy knows how to make extremely cool and entertaining films. The Last Stand looks like it's going to be a fun action-packed thrill ride of greatness. It also stars Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Jaimie Alexander, Luis Guzman, Peter Stormare, and Genesis Rodriguez, who all looks great in the movie.

Here's the synopsis:

After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy.

With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow.  Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.

The movie is scheduled tobe released on January 18th. Watch the trailer below and get excited!

Watching this trailer for Dexter season 7 was a "holy shit!" moment for me. I will tell you that it most definitely contains spoilers, so if you don't want to know what to expect from this next season, then I strongly suggest you don't watch it. I just couldn't help myself, and after having watched the trailer several times already, I will tell you that I don't regret it.

I honestly think that this will be the most intense season of Dexter to date, even more intense than John Lithgow's Trinity Killer season, and that was crazy! I lost sleep over that season. But after watching this latest trailer you'll see that there's so much more at stake for our favorite serial killer. Chances are, the footage shown in this latest trailer isn't even the tip of the iceberg!

Holy crap, I wish I could watch this season all right now! Unfortunately for us hardcore Dexter fans we're going to have to wait until September 30th when it premieres on Showtime at 9PM ET/PT. Ok, now if you plan on moving forward and watching this trailer, brace yourself for awesome insanity.

BULLHEAD Director to Take on THE TIGER

$

0

The director of the Oscar-nominated foreign film Bullhead, Michael R. Roskam, is set to direct his first Hollywood feature film. Focus Features has hired him to direct a film called The Tiger, which is based on a true story about a murderous tiger in Siberia.

The script for film was adapted by Babel scribe Guillermo Arriaga from a book written by John Vaillant. The story "takes place on the Siberian plain, where humans encroach on a tiger’s habitat with tragic results. There is a great male lead role of an animal activist and researcher who must stop a man-eating tiger that is attacking the inhabitants of a remote village in Russia’s Far East. The tiger isn’t just killing people, it’s murdering them, and the team that tracks him know their nemesis is cunning, injured, and starving, making it even more dangerous."

At one point Darren Aronofsky was set to direct the movie, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie attached to star. The latest report says that Pitt and Aronofsky are still attached to produce. Aronofsky dropped out of the project to focus on Noah, and there's no word on if Pitt will still star in the film either.

This is an interesting story that will make for an awesome movie!

Here's the full description of the book:

It’s December 1997, and a man-eating tiger is on the prowl outside a remote village in Russia’s Far East. The tiger isn’t just killing people, it’s annihilating them, and a team of men and their dogs must hunt it on foot through the forest in the brutal cold. As the trackers sift through the gruesome remains of the victims, they discover that these attacks aren’t random: the tiger is apparently engaged in a vendetta. Injured, starving, and extremely dangerous, the tiger must be found before it strikes again.

As he re-creates these extraordinary events, John Vaillant gives us an unforgettable portrait of this spectacularly beautiful and mysterious region. We meet the native tribes who for centuries have worshipped and lived alongside tigers, even sharing their kills with them. We witness the arrival of Russian settlers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, soldiers and hunters who greatly diminished the tiger populations. And we come to know their descendants, who, crushed by poverty, have turned to poaching and further upset the natural balance of the region.

This ancient, tenuous relationship between man and predator is at the very heart of this remarkable book. Throughout we encounter surprising theories of how humans and tigers may have evolved to coexist, how we may have developed as scavengers rather than hunters, and how early Homo sapiens may have fit seamlessly into the tiger’s ecosystem. Above all, we come to understand the endangered Siberian tiger, a highly intelligent super-predator that can grow to ten feet long, weigh more than six hundred pounds, and range daily over vast territories of forest and mountain.

Beautifully written and deeply informative, The Tiger circles around three main characters: Vladimir Markov, a poacher killed by the tiger; Yuri Trush, the lead tracker; and the tiger himself. It is an absolutely gripping tale of man and nature that leads inexorably to a final showdown in a clearing deep in the taiga.

The CW has released a new poster for their upcoming comic book TV series Arrow, and it shows a crazy scarred up Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow, played by Stephen Amell. Four new pictures of Alex Cross have surfaced, and I am pretty pumped! I have to admit when I heard Tyler Perry was being cast I had trouble seeing it, but he looks pretty much like a hardass holding a shotgun to the deranged looking Matthew Fox. Still too early to tell, but I think this movie will be very exciting!
